I’m sitting on a railway station...

What conjures up memories for you? Books, music, poetry, radio, food? I have vivid memories of sitting in the middle of the back of the car (a middle child – and of course, the most reasonable…, so always in the middle.) A Walkman pinned to my head. The sounds of Bros, Five Star, Sister Sledge, Fame pumping through. The music, providing a barrier to the other three sat beside me, the folks in the front and the dog in the boot who so often tried to jump over causing chaos on the Rainford Bypass!

When the batteries to the Walkman had ran out (or had been borrowed by a sibling – I am a middle child – and of course, the most reasonable…) it was Simon and Garfunkel playing on the tape deck or ‘Hold your Plums’ with Billy and Wally (iykyk!). If I was very unlucky as was often the case, sport dominated my life and my ear drums. The wireless as it was known would be a permanent fixture in one room with the football pumping into our minds, the rugby, live on the tv- shouts of  ‘Andy Gregory has the ball’ in voices by commentators whose names I have long forgotten – but the sound of the syllables can and do float into my subconscious. Even now, I listen to Radio 5 live if I’m struggling to sleep. I’m not sure the Calm App or a Sleep story could help me with this and I’m sure a therapist would have a field day with that one…

As we get older we seem to gravitate towards those memories, looking for familiarity of the past whilst pushing into a future. We talk about grounding ourselves and remembering where we’ve come from. Looking after our oldest friends even if we haven’t seen them for years. If you’re of a certain age, this was a life built with effort, pay phones, landlines, photo development, meeting places and times that were fixed. It is not something to be dismissed.

I have built contacts on LinkedIn through my oldest friends (those that I met at the age of 3 or 4). I have wonderful memories of ballet classes with that person and I can still reel of her telephone number (landline of course).

When we meet new people we look for a link. Where are you from, we ask, do you know so and so? Did you go to school with? Life is about links and therefore business should be as well. Do we ever become too old to introduce new links that will serve us well with memories into retirement? I am not sure we do.

My role at Box Legal stands me in good stead for building solid contacts and links. We are innovative, develop new policy areas quickly and are always keen to move forwards. But we are also traditional in the way we view our team and our clients.  I know I’ve said this before but many of my clients are friends. It’s great to catch up with them and I love how my LinkedIn network serves me well with a mix of old friends and new, business colleagues, potential clients and our wonderful Box Legal panel. We plan to socialise more this year, so if you see us out and about, join us, mix the customary with the pioneering and make some memories with us.
